The workholding is causing chatter. Well, not usually.

This part was machined our of a solid block of 4" x 6" x 3-1/2" of 6061 aluminum. The walls and floors are only .020" thick and the finish is flawless. It was milled with one four flute carbide endmill in 30 minutes. Machining dynamics technology was used to set stable speeds, feeds and cutting depths. The workholding? Four tabs in each corner that were later cut off. The point is here that is the tool doesn't induce the vibration, the workpiece and workholding won't vibrate either. It has to start somewhere. If it doesn't start it doesn't happen.
